The Day / Night Cabin is a retreat that intensifies the transition between sunlight and darkness. Acting as a lens for natural cycles, the cabin heightens awareness of warmth, shadow, silence, and time. Material expectations are reversed: concrete becomes a vessel for the day, absorbing sunlight and storing warmth through its mass, while timber becomes a vessel for the night, creating a quiet, protective enclosure. Through compression and release, angled light, deep openings, and shifting atmospheres, the occupant moves between opposing conditions — bright and dark, heavy and light, exposed and sheltered.
The cabin follows a daily ritual. Day spaces capture and amplify sunlight through sharp geometries, warm surfaces, and moving shadows, while night spaces absorb sound and deepen stillness. Stone reconnects the body to the raw landscape, grounding the experience in geological time. Set within the Surrey–Kent countryside, the cabin uses orientation, thermal mass, and natural ventilation to create comfort while reducing its environmental footprint. It does not imitate nature, but concentrates it — transforming ordinary changes in light and climate into intimate moments of perception.
